| It’s impossible to chronicle the 20th century’s scientific and technological advancements without mentioning the almost unbelievable revolution in transportation. The Transportation Revolution is as important an element in the modern world as castles were in the Dark Ages. Changes began to take place with the advent of the railroad in the early 1800s. By the American Civil War, the railroad had taken a firm root, and made fast interstate travel possible. Yet, by the turn of the century, most people still used the traditional horse and buggy to get from place to place. By 1890, the bicycle had gained in popularity, but was still impractical for long distance travel. It was around the turn of the century that several other new contraptions began to become popular - the motor car, the trolley, and finally the airplane. In Waukesha, the urban trolley became very popular for it’s daily transportation out to Waukesha Beach, and an Aviation Club was formed as use of the airplane became ever more prevalent. |
