State Certification

If you would like to apply for a certification number you can:
- Come to City Hall, 201 Delafield St., Room 200 and pick up an application form. You can then send the completed form along with the required fee to Safety and Buildings.
- Call Safety and Buildings in Madison @ 1-608-261-8500 and have them mail the appropriate form to you. Click on the link provided here. This will take you to Safety and Buildings' Homepage. Once you are at their homepage, choose "credentials". Safety and Buildings

A homeowner, doing work on his/her own single or two family residence, does not have to obtain a certification number. Any work being done will still require a building permit. If you, as the homeowner, are applying for the building permit then you must also do the work. You cannot hold a building permit in your name and then have someone else do the work. This would circumvent the purpose of "contractor certification".
