Sotarian

Built in the 1880s by a small, private developer, the Sotarian Spring on the corner of Foulton and Hartwell Avenues was not widely known or often written about during the Springs Era. However, unlike many of it's more wealthy and popular brothers, Sotarian managed to escape destruction after the era ended.

From 1912 to about 1920, the ROXO Spring Water Company piped water from it's spring basin and bottled it for distribution. In the 1920s, a large cement slab with two metal doors was placed over the spring, and as the years passed, the spring was almost forgotten.

Rumors about a heart shaped spring in the area recently (1990s) led some members of the Landmarks Commission and 1834 Club to unseal the slab of stone and look to see what lay beneath. For the first time in over 70 years, Sotarian Spring was opened again, and sure enough, it was found to be in the shape of a heart. Negotiations are currently underway between the City and the property owner for permanently reopening the spring to the public. (1999)
