An owner of a single family dwelling may do his or her own work, without being licensed, if they reside in the dwelling that they intend to remodel. A permit will still be required. Please note that with all plans submitted to our department require an additional digital copy for specific information. A homeowner may not do any air conditioning work at their residence. Air conditioning work requires a State of Wisconsin Freon Handling certification. Federal and State law prohibits the venting of hydrocarbons (freon) into the atmosphere. To make sure that freon isn't vented to the atmosphere special training is required to work on air conditioning and refrigeration systems. A contractor working on a one or two family residential dwelling is required to have State of Wisconsin Builder Certification. In order to obtain a building permit you will need to bring all of the following to City Hall, Room 200, 201 Delafield St. Two sets of plans drawn to a scale not less than 1/4"=1'. Each set of plans must contain a plan view and a cross section view. Label each set of plans with project address. A completed, signed, building permit application. List all of the subcontractors working on the job. List the location of the job and the general contractor along with their Certifica-tion number. If the project is an addition, pool, accessory building or deck, provide two copies of a survey showing the location of the project relative to other buildings on the property and to the property lines. When your plans have been reviewed and approved, you will be notified and informed of the amount owed for the required permit fee. When you are ready to call in an inspection, give the permit number, project address, type of inspection requested and the day you want the inspection performed.
