Senior Newsletters - published monthly - are available for $5.00 per year to residents ($10.00 for non-residents) to help cover mailing costs. Goals of the Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Senior Programs
" To provide positive events that allows older adults to interact with other community members and build friendships making the community stronger, healthier and more supportive.
" Implement activities that are pleasurable and improve health and well being.
" Create opportunities for socialization on an ongoing basis.
" Host activities that stimulate seniors intellectually.
" Provide an opportunity that allows seniors to reminisce.
" Develop a variety of activities to allow attendees to participate at many different levels (whether it is listening, talking, playing or watching).
" To provide some opportunities to senior free of charge.

Resident policy on programs
A resident is any person who resides within the City limits of Waukesha. Non-residents must pay an additional surcharge established by the Parks, Recreation and Forestry board.

Programs offered at no charge to seniors

Senior Fun and Games Program
"Special Event" scheduled once a month from September through May offers a great afternoon of entertainment for seniors 55 years and better. Some of the activities include: musical entertainment, group games, bingo (always played for a portion of the event) and seasonal activities.

Place: Schuetze Recreation Center, Riverview Rm.
Dates: 2nd Mondays, September-May

Bunco
Bunco is a fast pace dice game. In this program everyone is welcome - no experience necessary.

Place: Schuetze Recreation Center, Riverview Rm.
Dates: 4th Mondays, Every month except December
Time: 1:00 - 3:30 pm

Open Cards Primarily sheepshead played but other games are welcome. If possible participants are asked to bring a partner. Place: Schuetze Recreation Center, Riverview Rm. Dates: Monday Evenings Time: 6:00 - 8:00 pm

Speaker Series
The Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department along with the Oak Hill Terrace and Oak Hill Village Laureate Group Retirement Community, ProHealth Care, and Aging and Disability Resource Center of Waueksha County provide a "Step into Health" Speaker Series for seniors to learn the best ways to stay healthy and promote independence.

Place: Schuetze Recreation Center, Riverview Rm.
Dates: 4th Monday of the month (September, November, January., March and April) - Dates Vary as it depends on speaker availability
Time: 11:30 am to 12:30 pm

Brown Bag Conversations
This is an oppoerunity to learn more about your community-informal interactive discussion with local officials, business leaders and organization directors in a relaxed environment. Participants bring their lunch, thoughts, questions and ideas.

"Fire Up" Fridays
Play billiards, ping pong or walk in the gym with other seniors at the Schuetze Recreation Center. Men and women of all skill levels are encouraged to participate in these self-directed activities.

Senior Trips
One to three trips per month are coordinated by the Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department. Information on Senior trip opportunities can be obtained through the "Seniors on the Go" newsletter or by contacting the WPRF office.

City of Waukesha residents and non-residents pay the same fee at this time.

Community Service
RSVP - Drop In's
In cooperation with the Interfaith Senior Programs/Retired Senior Volunteer Program WPRF has a volunteer group that helps with community projects, stuffing envelopes, mailings, and much more. Refreshments are provided.

+RSVP - "Cool School"
Senior volunteers are needed to play a positive role in the lives of children in our community. Seniors would be asked to listen to children read, assist with homework, play passive games or create crafts with the children. All volunteers would be subject to a background check.

Place: Hawthorne or Prairie
Dates: M, Tu, W, Th, F (*All commitment levels welcome)
Time: 4:00-5:00pm*

Senior Advisory Board
The Waukesha Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is fortunate to have a Senior Advisory Board to help make recommendations to staff about policies, programs and goal development, review and evaluate day to day functions, and act as a sounding board and brainstorming group regarding programs for people 55 years of age and older.

Membership:
" The Parks, Recreation and Forestry board appoints this seven-member board.
" Minimum of three members over 60 years of age
" Minimum of two men and two women
" Appointed by the Park and Recreation Board
Terms:
" Serve two year term (maximum of two consecutive terms)
" Appointed in September

Independent Living
RAM Program
Repair and maintenance financial assistance provided for adults 60 years of age and older and disabled homeowners. This program is designed for smaller home projects ($1,000.00 or less). Participants must meet specific guidelines and reside in the City of Waukesha.

AARP Mature Driving
50 Years & Better
AARP Driver's Safety Program is the first and most recognized comprehensive nationwide course designed especially for the older driver. This eight-hour classroom refresher is sponsored by AARP. In this course you will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws, rules of the road, and adjustments to age related changes. You do not need to take a test. This information is taught in an interesting and entertaining format. Some insurance companies provide premium reductions to persons who have completed this course.

Carfit
Carfit is a program that uses the skills of a therapist to measure the driver and the safety devices of a car to make sure all are maximized for optimal performance, such as are your mirrors fully functional and how close would you be to the deployed air bag. Participants are assessed individually in their own cars - the appointments are approximately 20 minutes in length. Recommendations specific to your needs will be offered by the team of therapist. Benefit Specialist
We are pleased to announce Waukesha County Aging and Disability Resource Center will provide services at the Schuetze Recreation Center. A benefit specialist is a person trained to help older adults who are having a problem with their private or government benefits, by cutting through the "red tape" of the various federal, state and county systems. They help older adults figure out what benefits they are entitled to and let them know what they must do to receive them and work with numerous other senior issues. Bring along your questions and concerns.
