All of the following activities require a permit:

Construction of New Commercial	Basement Bedrooms
Construction of New Residential	Handrails
Alteration of Existing Buildings	Spa
Siding	Electrical Work
Heating Work	Ventilation Work (Furnace)
Air Conditioning work	Plumbing Work
Decks	Gazebos
Foundation repair	Recreation Rooms
New Garages	Swimming Pools
Signs	Street Occupancy
Change of Occupancy	Garden Sheds
Wheelchair Ramp Construction	Installing an Awning
Installing New Kitchen Cabinets	Repair of Fire Damage
Moving of Buildings	Wrecking of Buildings

Prior to obtaining a permit, you may need to have plans that are State Approved if you are constructing or altering a commercial building.

You will not need a permit if you are:

Re-roofing a building*	Installing a new driveway
Installing sidewalks on private property	Landscaping
Erecting a fence	Installing an at-grade patio

*Even though a permit is not required for roofing,a maximum of 2 layers is allowed per City of Waukesha Code.

PLEASE NOTE: A homeowner intending to do their own work, and apply for a permit in their name should keep in mind that by doing so, they are assuming full liability for code compliance.
