Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO YOU INTEND TO PLEA?

You have the option of three pleas:

GUILTY

Admitting guilt to the violation. A forfeiture (amount due) will be ordered by the court and you may be given up to sixty days to pay the ticket.

NO CONTEST

A statement indicating that you do not wish to contest the charge. The Judge must find you guilty upon a no contest plea, but the plea cannot be used as evidence against you if there is a civil suit for damages. For example, if you have been in a property damage accident.

NOT GUILTY
Indicates you would like to contest the citation. If a not guilty plea is entered the matter will be scheduled for a pretrial conference at a later date to meet with the Assistant City Attorney and discuss the matter privately.

HOW DO I ENTER MY PLEA?
If your ticket indicates MUST APPEAR you must appear in person on the court date, unless you enter a not guilty plea in writing. The options for entering your plea are listed below.

If your ticket does NOT say Must Appear
If you do not want to contest the ticket you can send your payment in with a copy of the ticket. The court will accept this as a No Contest plea and there will be a finding of guilt. The payment will be applied to the ticket. No appearance is necessary. If it is a traffic ticket the information will be forwarded to the Motor Vehicle Department who will then assess appropriate points against your record.

HOW DO I GET A COPY OF THE POLICE REPORT?
Contact the City Attorney's Office at
262 524-3520
There is a minimum $2.00 fee

I JUST WANT TO PAY MY TICKET

If your ticket does not say MUST APPEAR, send a copy of your ticket with your payment to the address listed below. Payment of the citation is considered a No Contest plea. If this is a traffic violation, the conviction will be sent to the Motor Vehicle Dept. and points will be assessed against your driver’s record by the Motor Vehicle Dept.
