Safety Seat Tips Infant Seat - Best seat for infants. Seat should be reclined at 45 degree angle.
- Used rear-facing. All infants should ride rear-facing until they are 20 pounds AND 1 year old.
- NEVER place in a seating position with air bag.
Convertible Seat - Used rear-facing for children under 1 year AND 20 pounds.
- Used forward facing for children after one year AND 20 pounds.
- Can typically be used until child reaches 40 pounds (check the individual seat's rating).
Shield Booster Seat - Use only when no shoulder belts are available.
- Shield is less effective for taller children.
- Shield should be removed at 40 pounds, and base used with lap/shoulder belt. If no shoulder belt is available in the vehicle, parents must consider other options once child reaches 40 pounds.
High Back Booster Seat - Most are designed for use from 30 to 60 pounds.
- High back provides head, neck and spine support.
- Some include a five-point harness that can be used until 40 pounds.
- At 40 pounds, remove harness and use as belt-positioning booster.
Belt Positioning Booster Base - "Boosts" child up so that seat belt fits correctly.
- Used until 60 pounds.
Correct Seat Belt Fit - Lap belt should fit low across hips, not stomach.
- Shoulder belt should fit snug across shoulder, not neck.
- Generally, seat belts do not fit a child correctly until at least 60 pounds.
- Children should ride in a car seat or booster seat until a seat belt fits the child correctly.
