Attached Decks

All decks in the City of Waukesha must be built according to City and State Building Codes. All decks proposed to be constructed require a building permit

Contractors building decks in the City must have State Certification.

General Information for all attached decks

All post footings must be a minimum of 48" below grade.

Posts for decks more than 6' above grade must be 6"x 6"

Decks less than 6' above grade shall have 4"x 4" minimum size posts

Decks more than 24" above grade require guardrails

Stairs with more than 3 risers must have handrails

Steps may not vary more than 3/16" riser to riser

Wood used for deck construction shall be pressure treated or naturally decay resistant wood.
