Attached Decks

All decks in the City of Waukesha must be built according to City and State Building Codes.  All decks proposed to be constructed require a building permit.  Contractors building decks in the City must have State Certification.

General Information
for all attached decks

• All post footings must be a minimum of 48" below grade.
• Posts for decks more than 6' above grade must be 6"x 6"
• Decks less than 6' above grade shall have 4"x 4" minimum
  size posts
• Decks more than 24" above grade require guardrails.
• Stairs with more than 3 risers must have handrails
• Steps may not vary more than 3/16" riser to riser
• Wood used for deck construction shall be pressure treated
  or naturally decay resistant wood.
