2.                  Proud of Waukesha Company – Attached is a Biz Times article highlighting Gaco Western, which the City of Waukesha helped expand through industrial revenue bonds, which has created new shelters for military and disaster response.
 

3.                  Proud of Waukesha – Attached is an article with the great news that the Shoppes at Fox River received the Second Place Best New Retail Development Award at the Business Journal 2010 Real Estate Awards. Opus North told me that the Shoppes was the only new shopping center opening in 2009 in both Wisconsin and Minnesota. Last year Carroll University’s Pioneer Hall won Second Place for the Best New Residential Development and The Clarke Hotel and The Black Trumpet Restaurant won Second Place for the Best New Hotel Development. Waukesha should be extremely proud of our unprecedented economic development that has now received three prestigious awards.
 

4.                  Waukesha Awarded $92,000 Housing and Urban Development Grant for Lead Safety – Attached is the press release and official HUD letter with the fantastic news that Waukesha has been awarded a $92,000 grant from the Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control’s Fiscal Year 2009 Lead Hazard Control Capacity Grant Program. This is a direct result of our membership in the U.S. Conference of Mayors and our 2009 $150,000 Award of Excellence that I was honored to accept on behalf of Waukesha last June. This grant will allow us to fix more houses and have a greater chance to be successful in applying for future federal grants.

3.                  Proud of Waukesha – Attached is the great news that our Waukesha Water Utility also received a Best of State Engineering Excellence award for our Well 10 Radium Removal working with CH2M Hill, who is our consultant on our draft Great Lakes Water application.
 

4.                  Waukesha the 2009 Leader in Retail Economic Development – attached is a Business Journal article highlighting that Waukesha’s Shoppes at Fox River “was the only large retail center opening in 2009.” The owners of the new Men’s Hair House from Appleton at the Shoppes told me they looked at Madison and southeastern Wisconsin before deciding Waukesha was the best place to open their business.

3.                  Calendar Reminders – Due to the Primary Election this Tuesday, February 16, 2010, our council meeting will be this Thursday, February 18, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. All council members are strongly encouraged to attend the Special Water Utility Commission meeting on Thursday, February 25, 2010 in the Council Chambers at 6:00 p.m. Public discussion of the draft Great Lakes Water Application will start around 7:00 p.m. and you will have the opportunity to ask Dan Duchniak and our consultants questions. Monday, March 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. will be our Common Council Committee of the Whole to further discuss the possible application before you’re asked to vote on the first step, which would be moving the draft application forward.
 

4.                  Update on Marketplace/Weekend Plus Referral – Attached is a letter from American Newspaper Solutions related to Ald. Payne’s referral that former Ald. Betker also raised with the Council about the poor distribution practices for the free publications Martketplace and Weekend Plus. As you will see, I was successful in getting ANS to commit to improving their delivery plus residents who don’t want these publications delivered can call 414-224-2222 to get on their Do No Deliver list.
 

5.                  Census Pins – Included in today’s packet is a census pin from our Waukesha Complete Count Census Committee that I encourage you to wear because the more Waukesha citizens participate in the 2010 census, the more federal dollars our city, county, state, and local non-profits will receive based on our demographics.
 

6.                  Proud of Waukesha – Attached is the latest issue of Soho Magazine which is distributed to 6,000 business people in Southeastern Wisconsin. I had the honor of being interviewed, photographed, and as you will read, took advantage of it to promote that Waukesha is a great place to do business as well as a great place to live.

2.                  Milwaukee 7 Partnership – Attached is a page from the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce’s Blueprint for Economic Prosperity which highlights the Milwaukee 7 efforts for economic development. I am proud to represent Waukesha as the only mayor besides Mayor Barrett to be a member of this regional effort to attract, expand, and grow businesses in Southeastern Wisconsin.

3.                  Great Lakes Water Update – Attached is a press release from Milwaukee Common Council President Hines on their Public Works Committee action to recommend a letter indicating Milwaukee would be willing to consider selling Waukesha Water if the Council approves an application in 2010. I certainly agree that there may be an opportunity for historic regional cooperation.
